Representative Projects


The following are descriptions of relevant rail projects designed, detailed, and specified by Thomas W. Wiser:

  • HI-PRO Feed - Dexter, NM. Prepared design drawings for a 9,300 ft loop track off of the BNSF main line for delivery of up to 50 unit trains of grain per year. The design encompassed the layout of the roads and facility. Project was bid utilizing a bill of materials format associated with an engineers cost estimate.

  • Pasco Grain Offload Loop Track, J.R. Simplot Livestock Group - Pasco, WA. The project comprises the design of a 16,400' lead and loop track off of the Union Pacific and BNSF main lines for the delivery of up to 100 unit trains (100 cars per train) of 100-ton grain cars per year.

  • Moroni Feed Co., Moroni Utah. Prepared design drawings for a 9,200 ft loop track off of the UPRR main line for the delivery of up to 50 unit trains of grain per year. The facility also included additional storage tracks for soy storage.

  • Port of Vancouver, USA / ST Services. Prepare preliminary plans of various alternatives for the expansion of ST Services tank car storage to 80, 30,000 gal tank cars.

  • Columbia Grain, Port of Portland, Portland, OR. Prepare design plans for the expansion of the grain track storage tracks and for storage of the BNSF locomotives.

  • Weyerhaeuser Longview Mill, Longview, WA. Preparing conceptual plans for the realignment of several spurs within the Longview mill to accommodate the expansion of part of the facility.

  • Weyerhaeuser / Willamette Industries, Kingsport, Tenn. Responsible for the preparation of a rollover dump facility for unit trains of 40-60 cars adjacent to a CSXT yard. In addition, will be redesigning the paper mill shipping, PCC, Lime, CLO2, Coal and softwood pulp spurs into the back side of the paper mill.

  • TRI-MET South/North Light Rail Project - Portland, OR. Designed alternate alignments for freight rail trackage impacted by the South/North light rail project. These impacts included the Oregon & Pacific Railroad yard, the UPRR lead to Darigold, the UPRR Brooklyn yard, the UPRR Tillamook lead and the Kellogg Industrial Park.

  • Grain Offload Loop Track, J.R. Simplot Livestock Group - Mountain Home, ID. Design of a 7400' loop track off of the Union Pacific main line for the delivery of up to 100 unit trains (100 cars per train) of 100-ton grain cars per year.

  • Prudential Steel Ltd. / Columbia & Cowlitz Railway Co. - Longview, WA. Developed rail alignment plans for a 4500' lead and spur track for the new Prudential Steel facility in Longview. Design included multiple road crossings, connections to existing rail facilities.

  • Ashgrove Concrete, Durkee, OR. Provided field surveying and prepared a construction plan to add a second siding track to an existing siding adjacent to the UPRR main line.

  • Wood Chip Unloading Facility Spurs, Weyerhaeuser / Willamette Industries, Inc. - Hawesville, KY Rail plans for a six spur shipping facility, a single spur additives facility with hazardous spill containment, and a single PCC facility spur.

  • Broad River Chip Load Facility, Weyerhaeuser / Willamette Industries, Inc. - Rutherfordton, NC Two 3000'+ parallel tracks for a chip loading facility in rural North Carolina.

  • Mill Spring Chip Plant Facility, Willamette Industries, Inc. - Mill Spring, MO Two 3300' spurs connected to a 1051' lead spur off of the Missouri Pacific RR main line.

  • Rail Corridor Study, Lander County Commissioners - Lander County, NV Performed the engineering analysis, route layout and field reconnaissance portions of a study to identify potential railroad routes through Lander County (125 miles in length) toward Yucca Mountain.

  • West Campus - Tri Cities Science and Technology Park - Richland, WA Prepared a number of possible alternatives for rail routing, operation, and yard storage for the Tri Cities Science and Technology Park that encompasses 3000 acres west of Richland, WA.

  • Portland Development Commission - Portland, Oregon Review of the alternative alignments, costs estimates, and methodology of the TRI-MET conceptual alignments for the North-South Light Rail Corridor south of downtown Portland.

  • United Grain Corporation Track Improvements Project - Port of Vancouver, U.S.A. Large industrial project involving the design of approximately eight miles of track to increase the unit train capacity for United Grain Corporation and the Port of Vancouver Bulk Load Facility.

  • Penntech Project Railroad Spurs, Weyerhaeuser / Willamette Industries, Inc. - Johnsonburg, PA Provided planning and engineering for the relocation of a yard, two industries' spurs, the B&PRR main lines, a locomotive spur, and also provided four additional spurs for Willamette Industries, Inc. facilities.

  • Aggregate Load Facility Loop Track, Western Aggregates - Marysville, California This project involved the layout of preliminary alignments and profiles of an eight mile rail extension through Beale Air Force Base to provide access to an aggregate load facility.

  • Keiser Bridge Rebuild, BNSF Railroad (L.S. 442, Br. 65.4) Salem, OR Performed the field surveying, permitting, and plan set preparation for the bridge rebuild of a 508' timber pile trestle.

  • City of Henderson, Dawson Avenue & Foothills Drive Crossings - Henderson, NV Two at-grade, signalized, concrete road crossings consisting of 80 and 100 foot right-of-ways, four lanes and a median island.

  • BNSF Railroad Bridge Rebuild (L.S. 55, Br. 5.1) - Klamath Falls, OR Performed the field surveying for a 48' wide flange beam span with two frame trestle spans and six pile trestle spans over Highway 39.

  • N.W. Packing Track Improvements - Port of Vancouver, U.S.A. Preparation of an alignment to alleviate problems associated with 25-30 curves into a fruit packing dock.
